Round Teåkersjön with start at the front door. Beautiful hike through the forests and hamlets of the area along forest roads and through the village of Dalskog.

Hike from Sunnanåhamn to the nearby nature reserve. The destination is a viewpoint in the bird sanctuary.

Round on Baldersnäs, a beautiful parkland with a historic manor house and a nature reserve on the headland into Låxsjön.

Round to the forests and lakes of the western Kroppefjäll with starting point at the campsite at Ragnerudssjön.

The Tresticklan National Park right on the border to Norway is so far our highlight in the region. Alone the approach to the official parking lot is an experience. In the park, a wonderful circular trail leads you through untouched forests and lonely forest lakes.

About 40 minutes from Liane is the nature reserve Yttre Bodane on a headland on the shore of Lake Vänern. Here you will find beautiful trails, alternating between pine forest, rocky terrain and reed beds, and countless opportunities to rest and enjoy the view of the lake.

After a 75-minute drive through interesting landscapes, you reach the small harbour town of Strömstad on the west coast. In addition to the large ferries to Sandefjord in Norway, ferries to the Koster Islands, 10 km offshore, leave here several times a day and for little money. These are part of the Kosterhavet National Park, which includes both the large and small islands of this group, but also the underwater world there. We opted for a round trip around South Koster and have rarely experienced such a varied, wonderful hiking trail. The whole excursion is definitely recommendable.

Admittedly, a 1.5 hour drive is a lot, but the place is worth it and the sometimes quite lonely roads lead through beautiful countryside. The village of Smögen is considered a tourist hotspot. In travel guides you read about crowds of people pushing their way through the harbour. On a sunny Monday in early September, there was no sign of that and the crowd was absolutely manageable. Highly recommended before visiting the village is the loop over Sandöns Nature Reserve, which takes you over the magnificent rocky coastline. If necessary, you can combine the trip with a visit to Nordens Ark – a really unusual animal park.

About 20 minutes north of Mellerud is the southern of the two car parks of the Sörknatten Nature Reserve. From here, a really unusual and wonderful, very well-marked path starts over an approximately 6km long rock formation made of quartzite. As the rock is only sparsely overgrown, you have very beautiful views – from the highest points over the whole of southern Dalsland and over Lake Vänern. Astrid Lingren’s children’s novel “Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter” is said to have been filmed here.

Unfortunately, there is only this one path, and you could only do a round trip via the road. However, walking the path there and back is perfectly fine with these views and you meet very few people here.

An easy round from the viaduct in Håverud via Åsensbruk and Upperud. The rather touristy starting point at the ship’s bridge is reached after a 20-minute drive. Once you have passed the beautiful locks, however, calm quickly returns and you walk around the lake on easy trails. Although the path leads partly over the road to Upperud, the walk is very beautiful and leads past locks, villas and well-kept gardens. A nice café is located away from the crowds at the entrance to Upperud.

A longer, but really wonderful and varied tour right on the doorstep. You turn in Dalskog in the direction of the church and drive out the way to the crossroads to Famshed. Here you can park and go first on forestal tracks to the Karolinerstugan, which is beautifully located in the middle of the forest at the lake and offers some resting possibilities. Now you walk the “Karl-XII-väg (Karolinerleden)” to the east in the direction of Dals Rostock, and then you come back on the road past beautiful, remote villages in the direction of the parking lot. This round is a real jewel when the weather is nice.

Lysekil is about 100km from the cottage, but a very beautiful place on the archipelago coast and absolutely worth the longer journey. With the proposed round you start in the small harbor of the town (photo) and then walk over planks and footbridges along the beautiful coast. Behind the school, the path leads through a small nature reserve and through the village back to the starting point.

Also almost on the doorstep and also absolutely worth seeing: The western half of the Karl-XII-Väg through Kroppefjäll. Turn off road 172 at the small school in the direction of Järbo Kyrka. The road is asphalted up to the church and continues on gravel to the signposted parking lot. From here you walk on forest roads for about 15-20 minutes before the hiking trail branches off to the right. This trail is well marked, varied and quite lonely through a beautiful forest before you reach Karolingerstugan after a few kilometers. From here, after a rest at the lake, you either go back to the car in about an hour, but much more recommendable is the loop around Stora Hallesjö in the south. A beautiful path around the lake and on its west side back to the main trail.

After we visited South-Koster last year, now it was the turn of North Koster. This time we took the ferry from Strömstad to the stop Västra Bryggan to the northern island. This is still a bit more pristine, lonelier and wilder than its sister in the south. The way goes through the village and then with beautiful views along the coast and later through the rugged hinterland. Back at the pier, you can now take the automatic cable ferry to the southern part and walk on very well marked paths, for example to Kilesand, from where you return to Strömstad. It is also possible to make our two Koster-rounds in one day.
